where can i get free wood chips in minnesota? I heard maybe you can get them at landfills or whatever.

Check with your municipality. I live in Wisconsin, and our public works department will deliver them if you call and request some. Otherwise, talk to your electric company. When they trim trees, they run the branches through a chipper, and they may have them available. Hope this helps.

Free Wood Chips from Tree Trimmer?
I need to put down mulch (or equivilent) to help control our weeds and my parents suggested that what they did in Pittsburgh, PA (I live in North GA, by the way) is call the Electric Company or Tree Trimmers and they’ll deliver free dump truck loads of wood chips. Has anyone else done this? Do they offer this service? I’d think they’d sell it to a mulching company.

To use tree bark it needs to have all the insects living inside it killed off!
Mulching companies do this, and they also treat the stuff so that insects don’t want to return!
Companies that want to get rid of the original material have to take it to the mulcher, and they don’t get such a wonderful sum for it in the first place!
By all means, ask if you can have a load, and if there’s a charge. You can but ask!

Most likely there are. Tree trimmers have to bring their chips to the local dump where they may be charged a fee of $5 to as much as $15 per cubic yard, for what’s called green waste. There it is used as a top cover about 6″ deep to cover the regular garbage. Look in the yellow pages for tree trimmers and call a couple up and see what they say. You might also call your local garbage dump first to find out what they charge to dump green waste, that might give you some bargaining room.

should i get mulch/wood chips for my backyard?
i have to dogs. i want to plant grass in late spring 08. supposedly i can get free wood chips from the city. my backyard has no grass. when it rains, there’s mud everywhere. i’m worried about the mushrooms the mulch will produce. will it harm my dogs if they eat it? also, will i have to remove the mulch before planting? i just want something that will keep the mud at bay. my dogs are inside/outside dogs.

The mulch chips should be fine. They only grow fungus if they get wet for a long period of time and are undisturbed – with your dogs romping on them I wouldn’t worry about mushrooms. Be aware that they’ll probably also chew the chips – a lot of dogs consider these fair game as chew toys.

I’m not sure about out there, but here if you see utility crews clearing for line clearance, they usually have chippers on the back of their trucks and can tell you where they dump the chips. Most communities anymore have city mulch sites. Just a thought.

Try calling a tree triming service. You’ll have to pick them up, but you should be able to get them free.
